SUMMARY:Swift Night Out! Swifts Over Huntsville
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we watch one of our favorite urban birds\, Chimney Swifts\, work themselves up into their nightly “swiftnado\,” and then count the number of individuals who enter the roost. We will meet at the downtown courthouse at the North side stairs at 6 p.m. and begin with a brief introduction to swifts and why chimneys are important to them. There are three known chimneys in downtown Huntsville and we can visit them all (all are within walking distance). \nBring your binoculars! We will have a limited number of binoculars on hand for those who need them. All ages and abilities welcome! \nAfter these aerial acrobats have fledged their young and cleared out their nests\, the entire North American population makes its way south to winter along the remote headwaters of the Amazon River. On their way there\, they congregate in huge roosting flocks with as many as two or three thousand birds sharing a single chimney—numbers that make for a tremendous spectacle when they all pour into the tiny opening at once. To learn more about Chimney Swifts\, visit www.chimneyswifts.org. \n

SUMMARY:Experiencing Bird Behavior Up Close with Herb Lewis
DESCRIPTION:We’ll take a look at a broad range of bird behaviors that are difficult to observe during typical birding tours in the field. The success of attracting a wide variety of birds to a backyard wildlife-habitat garden has provided opportunities to observe exceptional behaviors up close. This workshop will illustrate the techniques incorporated by the author into his own backyard habitat that set the stage for observing these intimate bird behaviors. The goal is to create a heightened sensitivity for observing bird behavior at home and in the field.

SUMMARY:Experiencing Bird Migration in the Backyard - Herb Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Tennessee Valley Audubon Society is delighted to welcome Herb Lewis to speak about creating bird-friendly habitats. \nEach Spring and Fall\, for a two to three week period\, thousands of migrating songbirds fly over the Tennessee Valley nightly on their epic journey between their nesting areas in the northern parts of North America and wintering areas in the tropics.  This presentation includes proven techniques of garden design for creating a backyard bird-friendly habitat.   Herb‘s simple ideas and principles have brought over 90 bird species to his Huntsville backyard since 2004.  Herb will share personal photos of many migrating birds attracted to his backyard wildlife habitat environment. \nHerb Lewis lives in Huntsville and is a retired engineer.  A popular speaker\, Herb draws from his personal hobbies\, landscaping\, birding and photography to inspire others with techniques for creating a bird-friendly backyard. Herb is also an honorary Master Gardener and instructor for the Master Gardener program in North Alabama. He is also an instructor for Birmingham Audubon Mountain Workshop and he helped sponsor and develop Lewis Birding Trail at Huntsville Botanical Garden. \n  \n
